Culminating Blog Reflection

In doing my capstone project I think I used critical thinking the most, because we had to choose what was appropriate to put in our paper. In doing my paper, since I had a subject that had a lot of information, I had to really look into all the information that I planned on putting on my paper. I noticed that there was a lot of information that was not reliable. I also had to do critical thinking on where I was going to find a mentor. I don’t really like to talk to people I don’t know, but in doing this project I noticed I was going to be doing a lot of talking to a lot of people. I did a lot of communication with not only my mentor, but also the other doctors that work at the clinic I volunteered at. Also in doing this project it showed me that I was going to be having to work with people I didn’t really know. I’m going to have to know how to collaborate with others if I still want to become a doctor.
In doing the capstone project, I gained more social skills. I gained social skills, because before I did this project I didn’t like going to talk to people I didn’t really know. I personally hated being in groups of people, but doing this project it showed me that if I pursue becoming a doctor I might have to be with a lot people sometimes. I also personally didn’t like doing research papers, because I didn’t know how to look up the right information. I gained some knowledge to how to use some tools to look up information that is up to date, and also that is reliable. I know later on in college I’m going to have to use the tools I learned and it’s better that I learned them now rather than later.
In doing this project I did encounter some challenges, but nothing that I couldn’t overcome. One big challenge that I had at the beginning was trying to find a mentor. Since I’m a shy person I wasn't looking forward to going to places I’ve never been at. At first I went to a clinic in San Francisco, but I couldn't do my project there because I wasn’t eighteen. After that I asked a hospital, but I couldn’t do it there either because of privacy issues. Finally I asked another clinic in San Bruno and they let me volunteer there. Finally I had found a mentor. First time going I was shy, but after my third time going I got use to it. They told me that I couldn’t be shy when talking to the patients. Another challenge I faced was doing my research paper. I’ve always struggled in doing research papers so I wasn’t looking forward to that. Learning some tools though really helped me with that. I also had some help by other people in editing my paper.
In doing the capstone project I learned that I can’t always be shy and also it showed me how to be more social. Also at the beginning of the project everything seemed difficult, but it really isn’t if you try at it.

Theme of 1984

A theme from 1984 is when people find authority to be corrupt they tend to rebel. This theme exists because in the book 1984 the main character Winston rebels against his party. They have ever body watched by the screens and he gets frustrated. One example that shows him rebelling is in the beginning of book one when he writes in a journal. They are not supposed to be writing their thoughts and he knows that it’s wrong that he is doing it, but he continues anyways. By him doing this shows that he rebelling against the party, because inside his head he knows it’s wrong. Another example of him rebelling is when he starts to have a relationship with Julia. They can’t be seen together having a relationship, but they both do it anyways. They are both scared that they might get caught but they rebel and do it anyways. To not get caught they meet in a secret place so they won’t be seen. This shows that in the book Winston is not the only one rebelling against the party. Being controlled by someone and having very strict rules can cause people to rebel, because some people just get frustrated and tired of always being controlled.

14th Time Volunteering

So since the last time I blogged I have gone to see my mentor four more times. I went on Monday March 4th, Wednesday March 6th, Monday March 11th, and Wednesday March 13th. I did all the stuff that I always do when I go. I was with my mentor for a while we than sat down and she explained to me information on how to become a pediatrician and how to fun it is. I really appreciated that she took time and explained to me some stuff. After that more patients started to come in so I went with the medical assistants and they let me do some physicals on the patients. I already knew well how to do the physicals so they didn’t need to follow me no more. When I went on March 11th I started talking to the medical assistants about what I was planning on doing for my physical project, and how I was going to ask them question. I also gave my mentor my evaluation, because on the 13th it was going to be my last day, because there was another student that was going to do her hours there too. After she filled out my evaluation she also had the medical assistant look at it, because I also spent some time with them. They also pit down some stuff on my evaluation. On the 13th I had my questions I was going to ask the medical assistants and the doctor as part of my physical project. I was nervous at first but then it was ok. The medical assistants also took some pictures of me doing some of the things that I always do and I’m going to put the pictures in my physical project. I’m actually going to miss going to volunteer and helping out he medical assistants, I can’t wait till I’m actually doing this as my job.

10th time volunteering

So this week when I went to go volunteer for the senior project it was my tenth time going. I went on Monday february 25th. I only went once that week because next day when I was suppose to go I didn’t have a ride so I emailed my mentor that I wasn’t going to be able to make it. When I did go on Monday I did some of the usual stuff that I always do. I also had patients that have already gone when I was there before. Some of the patients that were little kids came up to me and said “hi Karina” I found it so cute that the little kids remmebered me. They kept asking me if I was the one that was going to do their height and weight again. After when they were leaving I gave them some stickers. I also follwed my mentor around for a while then I also follwed the nurses when they would give some of the patients shots. They sould explain to me what each shot was for and why it was important to get them. Before when I go back I want to have an idea about what I am going to be doing for the visual part for the presetation.

9th Time Volunteering

So I didnt go volunteer for a whole week because I got really sick so I missed two days that I was suppose to go. I emailed my mentor to let her know that I wasnt going to be showing up and she just told me to come back when I felt better. I went back on February 18 which was Presidents Day, I went on that day because we didnt have school so I used it as an advantage to make up some hours that I missed when I was sick. For me I thought that, that day was kind of slow they didnt have alot of patients. I was talking to the nurses and they asked where I planned on going after high school and stuff like that. They all gave me great advice about where I should go and they even gave me some websites for me to check out.
I also went to the clinic on February 20th. I got there and at first I was with my mentor looking at patients. After they didnt really have patients so I was just talking to some of the nurses they are really friendly. After some patients came in some needed some shots so I followed the nurses to give the shots to the patients.

Welcome to Oceania

I think Winstons biggest conflict so far is that he started to write on a diary and thats illegal were hes at because you can't write your thoughts out. One day he opened his door, he was scared because he thought it was Thought Police and he thought that they were there to arrest him. I think thats his biggest conflict so far because he seems likes hes paranoid about writting his criminal thoughts on the journal, because he knows hes not suppose to. Oceania seems to be a place that everybody follows one person almost like they have one ruler. Winston has a telescreen and its always on. The Thought Police uses the telescreen to monitor what all the people living in oceania are doing. Makes them have no freedom they are always being controlled by the Thought Police. Something that is always said in the book is "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU" and that is true because everybody is always being watched.

Stranger than Fiction

To be an author it means to write a story or a book. To be a narrator it means that someone reads a story out loud or who reads a book out loud. The two are very different because reading a book or story is not the same as telling a story out loud. In the movie we watched in class Stranger Than Fiction mostly the thing was a narration, because the women was telling the story about the guy. Most of the time she was the one talking and like in the movie when he would get up in the morning while he would be brushing his teeth she would be the one saying it. In the movie she would be writing while narrating his whole life. As he would live his life she would be narrating it.

After writing my paper I noticed it’s not that easy to be a narrator, because you want to write about a lot, but you also want everything to fit in right. For me it was hard to decide what to leave in my essay because I found a lot of interesting information but like an author you have to know what fits and what doesn’t. In my paper I talk about not only one specific person, but more about different types of people. I think writing about groups of people is more interesting than just talking about what person. Talking about groups hopefully makes my paper more interesting.

5th Time Volunteering

So this was my fifth time going to the clinic to volunteer. It was sort of different because my mentor who is the doctor was not in the day I went. There are three doctors that work there and they come in when my doctor doesn’t.  At first it was weird because I had got use to following my mentor around, but she not being there meant I had to follow the doctor that was there that day. One of the nurses introduced me to him and she explained to him why I was there and he was glad to help me. He asked me if I wanted to follow him around and I said yes. He would take time after we would see each patient to explain to me what he did and other things that was wrong with the patient I really appreciated that.

After I followed the doctor around for a while the nurses asked me if I wanted to do the usual things I do which are do the patients height, weight, vision, hearing test and also their temperature. I did that for a while and then it was time for me to leave.

Next time I go to the clinic I want to decide what I am going to be doing for my visual part of the project. The nurses there also said they would give me some ideas.

4th Time Volunteering

So I have gone to the clinic where I am volunteering for my senior project four times already, but I haven't blogged anything till now. The first time I went I was nervous because I didnt know what I was going to be doing. Also because I didnt know if the other nurses working there were going to like having me there. After being there for a while the nurses started talking to me and asking me about the project. Then my mentor Dr. OsmeƱa came and asked me if I wanted to go in the room with her, because she was going check a patient. At first I felt awkward being in the room with the patients but then I got used to it. My first day I thought went well. The second time I went I mostly followed the nurses. I followed all of the nurses that work there, but Maggie who is one of the nurses was the one that taught me how to do the basic stuff height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, vision, and hearing test. She then told me that the next patient coming I was going to have to do it myself but that she would be watching. I was nervous but I did it and she was their to help me if I
needed help.
After going for two times I now looked forward to going my third time and fourth time. Next time I go which is going to be my fifth time going Im going to think about what I can show that I have learned so I can get ideas when it comes down to the presentations.
